Fort Santo Domingo1628 by Spanish, local Taiwanese demolished 1637 to protest high tax, and Spanish rebuilt 1642, but they razed it later. Dutch took over and built "Fort Antonio in 1644, and local Taiwanese called them "the red-haired people", the fort was referred as "Red-haired Fort". The building was under Ching Dynasty control from 1683 to 1867. After the "2nd Opium War", the British took it over in 1868, and made it their Consular Residence. It was returned to the government of Republic of China in 1972. The building was refurnished and opened in 2005 to the public as a historical site, which is now the most popular point of interest in the town of Tamsui.
